DNREC Awards More Than $27,000 in Grants for Pollution Prevention Projects

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has awarded more than $27,000 in grants to businesses, non-profit organizations and agencies for pollution prevention projects. The cost-share funding was made available by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Delaware Pollution Prevention Project grant.

According to Crystal Nagyiski, manager of the Pollution Prevention Program, seven grant proposals were accepted based on the project’s effort to encourage source reduction and actively reduce pollution of Delaware’s air, water and land.

• $ 2500 to Delaware Nature Society, Hockessin, and the Appoquinimink River Association, Middletown, to conduct workshops to prevent stormwater runoff in Townsend. These workshops will be specially designed to provide homeowners with the education and tools needed to implement best management practices to reduce stormwater runoff and conserve water.

• $ 4965 to Daniel Metzgar Trucking, L.L.C., Newark, to install an auxiliary power unit on a diesel powered tractor trailer truck. This project will reduce truck emissions, conserve fuel and comply with anti-idling laws.

• $ 5000 to Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity, Dover, to implement a construction site material recycling project. This project will reduce the amount of construction debris disposed in landfills by recycling wastes into usable materials.

• $ 2400 to the Division of Water Resources (DNREC), Dover, to install a vial crusher. This project will reduce the amount of solid wastes disposed in the laboratory.

• $ 5000 to the Division of Parks and Recreation, Cape Henlopen State Park(DNREC), Lewes, to install a tankless water heater system within a Parks bathhouse. This project will reduce energy consumption.

• $ 4774 to BHR Transportation, Lincoln, to install an auxiliary power unit on a diesel powered tractor trailer truck. This project will reduce truck emissions, conserve fuel and comply with anti-idling laws.

• $ 2500 to Christiana Care Health Services, Newark, to implement a community medication take-back program. This project will establish a medication return and disposal program at three Christiana Care pharmacies, educate the public about the water quality hazards from flushing medications, and enhance public and patient safety.

DNREC’s Pollution Prevention Program, in addition to funding projects that achieve pollution prevention, is committed to addressing the issue through educational programs, presentations, publications, and partnerships with other organizations working to implement pollution prevention projects in Delaware.
