The best and easiest way to reduce the effects of pollution is to not pollute in the first place. The bacteria in pet waste can be harmful for aquatic wildlife and humans if it is washed into streams by stormwater flows. In order to prevent pollution from washing into our local streams, the Appoquinimink River Association (ARA) and DelDOT led a demonstration installation of pet waste collection stations (called Dogipots) in the communities of Middletown Village and Cantwell Ridge. Those two demonstration projects were so successful that the ARA decided to provide local pet owners with more Dogipots in their parks and open spaces. In 2006, with the aid of a grant from the Pollution Prevention Program of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), the ARA was able to provide Dogipots to the Town of Middletown for use in Silver Lake Park, the Town of Townsend for use in open spaces and parks, the Town of Odessa for use in parks, and in the open spaces of the Willow Grove Mill development in Middletown.
