Having trees in our local open spaces make our communities look great, but they also serve another function. Trees are a proven natural resource that reduces water runoff from our roads and sidewalks by allowing the water to be absorbed into the ground. In addition, trees also provide food, shade, and habitat for wildlife. Because much of the watershed is devoid of trees, the Appoquinimink River Association has worked with communities throughout the watershed to reforest their open spaces. Two of these communities are Odessa Chase and Cantwell Ridge. With the help of ninety volunteers we planted over 4,000 tree seedlings on five acres in Cantwell Ridge and 145 larger trees on six acres in Cantwell Ridge and one acre in Odessa Chase. These trees are sure to make a long lasting difference in these two communities!
